The Sonoma County General Plan is a blueprint for how the county will grow over the next 20 years. It begins with a Vision which is used to develop Goals and Objectives outlining where development will take place, the climate action plan, and how natural resources will be protected. The Objectives eventually can become Ordinances, local laws.

The GP Update began in 2025 and the planners estimate that it will take 3 years to complete. Permit Sonoma is in charge of the Update, which will have public outreach and will ultimately be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
